Family-themed Halloween Costumes

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Guyyyysssss, it’s Halloween! You all probably thought I was talking about Christmas, but nope! I LOVE Halloween so, so much! The costume-designing, the dressing up, the decorating, the movie-watching, the pumpkin-carving, the trick-or-treating, the candy-eating, oh my! And it totally beats Christmas because you get the holiday fun but don’t have to focus on the “gift-giving” aspect, which can be so draining (you know, trying not to buy too much, or trying to find the one thing that they really want, or trying to be creative and original for EVERY person in your family…I like a challenge, but Christmas can be just a little stressful sometimes).

For Halloween, you JUST get to have fun. It’s literally impossible NOT to enjoy this spooktacular holiday!

My favorite thing to do before my son was born was to pick out weird, obscure, or unique ideas/characters to be for Halloween. This was probably the most fun costume I ever came up with:

Because, hello, I was super comfortable all night long.

I was also Queen Sara one year (King Friday the XIII’s wife from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood) and Mary Poppins another year. And since my son was born, this has gotten even more fun because we get to come up with family-themed Halloween costume ideas! For my son’s first Halloween in 2015, we dressed up as Pikachu, Ash Ketchum, and Misty from Pokémon (we were one year ahead of the Pokémon GO rage, #nobigdeal). Last year, my son was Willy Wonka and my husband and I were oompa loompas. This year my son is going to be Darth Vader, I’m going to be Princess Leia (NOT in a bikini), and my husband is going to be Luke Skywalker.

We just LOVE themed costumes!

Before you ask, no, you cannot buy the Pikachu costume anywhere, because I MADE IT. It’s, like, the only cool thing I’ve ever made (except for the bundle of joy wearing it).

Okay, enough about me. I wanted to share some family-themed Halloween costume ideas with you (in case you’re SUPER into Halloween like I am)! I love costumes that you can cobble together with things around the house, cheap thrift store purchases, and minimal dollars spent.

Here are just a few of my favorites (disclaimer: I am biased towards costume ideas that seem to stand the test of time, but don’t let that keep you from using a modern-day theme if you prefer!):

L-R, clockwise: Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Little Shop of Horrors.

L-R, clockwise: Mary Poppins, The Princess Bride, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan/Hook.

L-R, clockwise: The Little Mermaid, Smurfs, superheroes, The Simpsons, and The Wizard of Oz.

L-R, clockwise: Wild Kratts (creature power! Parents could be Chris, Martin, Aviva, or Koki), Little Red Riding Hood, Scooby Doo, and Sesame Street.

L-R, clockwise: Curious George (parents could be hotel/country home friends), solar system/space theme, and Pac-Man.

L-R, clockwise: Nesting dolls, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Frida Kahlo/self-portrait and Diego Rivera, and Beetlejuice.

L-R, clockwise: ET (parents could be Elliott’s mom/sister/friend), Napoleon Dynamite, The Goonies, and Ghostbusters.

L-R, clockwise: Ratatouille, Hocus Pocus (parents could be Max and Allison, Dani, or Max and Dani’s parents), Finding Dory, and Winnie the Pooh.

L-R, clockwise: Pinocchio, Dumb and Dumber, and Finding Nemo.

Again, I know these suggestions are biased toward my own personal preferences, but I hope they mean something to some of you and/or inspire you to come up with your own family-themed Halloween costumes! Tell us your ideas in the comments below so other families can share in the fun! Happy trick-or-treating!

What a fun mix! Thanks for including our Ghostbusters costumes. 🙂 We have a blast dressing up with a family theme each year.
